Detroit bankruptcy filing puts Obama in awkward spot |

Yea, so it happened anyway. Wasn’t there a kinda quid pro quo Michigan would voter for Obama if he would ensure a bailout for Detroit with a wink and nod?. Opps.

“I wasn’t going to let Detroit go bankrupt. Or Toledo go bankrupt. Or Lordstown go bankrupt. I bet on American workers,” Obama said in the final sprint to November’s election.

The specificity of words is extremely important in this case. Detroit (the city) isn’t the same thing at all as using the word “Detroit” as substitution for “the auto industry”. Both candidates used the term Detroit incorrectly in the same way, as if the city is ONLY the auto industry.

What was advocated by Obama was a bailout for the auto industry, but Detroit also has huge debt problems not related to that industry, including bad investments, junk loans etc. A great number of cities have been dealing with the consequences of poor city management, unable to rebuild and recover from the financial crises of 2009. Detroit probably won’t be the last one to require debt restructure.

I’m sure part of Obama’s intent in advocating a bailout for an industry vital to Michigan and Ohio was to garner more votes, but that isn’t really a “quid pro quo”, just a political calculation taken during an election contest.
